Using Glogster to Identify Community Helpers

Students will select pictures of community helpers and insert into a poster.  Students will select a background and frames for the pictures.  Text will be inserted to identify the community helper.  Students may then insert a video and music. 

Students will be able to identify community helpers.  Students will learn how to select and insert graphics, audio and video.  Writing skills will be reinforced by sending emails to fellow students.

Unit Overview

Students will select pictures of community helpers and insert into a poster.  Students will select a background and frames for the pictures.  Text will be inserted to identify the community helper.  Students may then insert a video and music.

Objectives

  • Students will be able to identify and describe the roles of at least four community helpers.
  • Students will apply critical thinking skills to organize information on their Glogster poster.
  • Students will publish information on the class internet Glogster website.
  • Students will present their Glogster poster to the class.

Time Required

This project requires approximately 4 hours total.  This includes class time and computer lab time.

Materials Required

  • Student textbook for discussing Community Helpers, computers with internet access, projector.
  • Permission slips signed by parent to guardian. 

Procedure

  1. Using a computer and the internet, the teacher will go to www.glogster.com/edu, open an account, and set up student accounts.
  2. The teacher may wish to create a group of community helper photos, video, and music for students to select from. If a server is available the teacher can store there, or wherever the school allows files to be stored.  Depending upon student ability and time permitted, the teacher may wish to download photos, video and sound onto the student account.
  3. Depending upon the ability of the students, the teacher may wish change the student passwords to something simpler for the students to use.
  4. The teacher will prepare a Glogster poster about community helpers to model what a finished product will look like.
  5. During the Social Studies lesson, the Students will discuss community helpers; what community helpers are, what they do, who they are.
  6. Teacher will show students the Glogster poster he/she has previously made.
  7. The class will discuss the Glogster Community Helpers project and review the rubric.  The teacher will model how to create a wall, insert photos, add a frame, insert a video and music.  The teacher will model how to insert and edit text.
  8. Students will go to a computer, open their Glogster account, and select a “wall”.
  9. Students will then insert photos with frames, a video and music.  Finally students will insert text .
  10. Students can send email to each other about their Glog using accountable talk.
  11. Finally students will present their project to the class.  Using accountable talk, the class will discuss the Glog.

Evaluation

The teacher will evaluate the project using the rubric.

Extension Activity

  • Students can add a podcast about community helpers.
  • Students can present their Glogster poster to other classes.
  • Students can make a holiday Glog.
