Objectives

  • Students will be able to create a PowerPoint following direct instructions from the teacher
  • Students will type information into PowerPoint
  • Students will insert pictures from a group of photographs saved on the server
  • Students will brainstorm words that describe natural disasters

Time Required

Six-30 minute class periods.

Materials Required

  • Instructional materials: handout-poem: The Secret of the Seed by Sheron Long and/or Acrostic Poem-Natural Disasters
  • Internet access: Appropriate pictures from the internet (found by teacher and saved on server or found by student)
  • Hardware: projection device and computer for direct instruction and viewing student’s product
  • Software: Microsoft Power Point

Procedure

Poem: The Secret of the Seed

HINT: It is best to download pictures and music before the students start.

  1. Students will study in science how seeds grow.  They will be doing several experiments to learn the concept.
  2. During the time students are studying about plants, the students will begin their PowerPoint.
  3. The PowerPoint will be direct teaching using an overhead project.
  4. Teacher hands out copy of poem-The Secret of the Seed by Sheron Long.
  5. Students will open PowerPoint.  They will type the title of the poem, author, and their name on the first slide.
  6. Then show students how to add a new slide.  They type the 1st stanza of the poem. Then they create new slide and do the 2nd stanza, repeating the process until the poem is typed.
  7. When all the stanzas are typed, the teacher will direct teach how to insert pictures.  You can download pictures before hand and have them saved on the server for students to obtain or if your students are computer savvy they can find their own pictures from the internet.  I download pictures ahead of time—it saves time.
  8. Students insert pictures that represent each stanza of the poem.
  9. Direct teach how to insert music.  I download music before hand and save the music in a shared file on server.
  10. Direct teach how to include background color.
  11. Direct teach how to use custom animation or animation scheme.
  12. Direct teach how to use slide transitions.
  13. Direct teach how to set the timing, so PowerPoint shows automatically.
  14. When complete the students will show their PowerPoint to their peers.

Acrostic Poem: Natural Disaster

Hint:  Download pictures ahead of time.

  1. Students will study natural disasters in science.
  2. During the time students are studying about natural disasters, the students will begin their PowerPoint.
  3. Teacher hands out copies of acrostic poem of different natural disasters.
  4. Teacher brainstorms with students words that describe disasters.  Students use the words that were brainstormed to use in their poem.
  5. The PowerPoint will be direct teaching using an overhead project.
  6. Students will open PowerPoint. On the Title slide they will use Word Art to type Natural Disaster. Use Word Art and type their assigned disaster. Use Word Art and type their name.
  7. Then show students how to add a new slide.  They type the 1st word from their poem and capitalize the first letter. Then they create new slide and do the 2nd line, repeating the process until the poem is typed. Students need to set the font at 60pts- Bold- Times New Roman. They can change it later if they have time.
  8. Teacher will direct teach students to return to 2nd slide and use word art (first selection -white outline), type the 1st letter of the word from the top of slide. Use the handles to make the letter as large as the box. Repeat process until they have typed the first letter for each slide.
  9. The teacher will direct teach how to insert pictures into each Word Art.  You can download pictures before hand and have them saved on the server for students to obtain or if your students are computer savvy they can find their own pictures from the internet.  I download pictures ahead of time—it saves time.
  10. Students insert pictures that represent their disaster into each letter.
  11. Direct teach how to include solid background color.
  12. Direct teach how to use custom animation or animation scheme.
  13. Direct teach how to use slide transitions.
  14. Direct teach how to set the timing, so PowerPoint shows automatically.
  15. When complete the students will show their PowerPoint to their peers.

Closure

Students will present their PowerPoint to their peers.

Evaluation

Students PowerPoint will be scored using a Rubric.

Extension Activity
